Sands of time...
Since time immemorial,
man has had this uncontrollable urge to be the master of time, expressed
adequately in his desire to pursue time travelling, to perhaps change a
vignette from the past, or to catch a glimpse of the unknown future. Sadly
though, such ambitions have remained confined to the pages of fiction.
Though much about time
remains mysterious and hypothetical, it is an undeniable fact that, time, after
all, cannot be conquered. it travels fast when we need it to wait, and does not
seem to pass over when we wish for it to. In other words, time is as we
perceive it, and we begin to value it precisely when we run out of time!
It is time that reaps
lives, and time that renews, time that turns sweet relations bitter and brings
arch enemies closer ; time that erects boundaries, and time that erases
differences ; time divides and unites, destroys and preserves, helps us recall
and forget. Time has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, and likewise, the
rise to stardom and fall to dust, of celebrities. Notwithstanding its
importance in the larger perspective, time counts the most in man's daily life.
From meeting deadlines, to finishing projects, time can make or break one's
career. Success comes only if efficiency goes hand in hand with accuracy. Thus,
maintaining punctuality in all walks of life has become the new yardstick
of excellence. , not to mention, patience to deal with delayed results, and
steady impatience to fulfill ambitions. Man has only to recognize how time can
be the healer of wounds, in a world marred by petty jealousies, vested
interests, deception, and consequent metal illnesses!
In many ways, man has
reduced the time to communicate, articulating his thoughts via electronic
devices, in place of the prolonged carriage of letters. The modern Phidipedes
is now the best gadget in town; so is the best motor vehicle, since technology,
if not time, is in man's grasp now.
Therefore, to be lazy, to
keep someone waiting, to arrive late when everybody else can make it on time -
are inexcusable offences, more sinful than shameful.
Man can never keep time
in fetters. What man can do, however, is make sure that he does not misuse or
waste time, idle away or engage in meaningless activity. This is paradoxical
too, since, only if a man works sincerely, will he require time to leisure
away, to replace the business in his brain with some vacuity, so that he can
work again, replenished and rested sufficiently. Time thereby reminds us of
nothing but the necessity to strike a balance, such that we can make our lives
meaningful, and engage in some form of meaninglessness once in a while...
